Founded in 2012 as an independent foundation by NWO and SURF, the Netherlands eScience Center is the national centre for the development and use of innovative software in academic research.  We are currently running more than 100 research projects in which our research software engineers (RSEs) collaborate with academic researchers across the Netherlands to advance science.  We award these research projects through yearly competitive calls for proposals that are open to all academic researchers in the Netherlands: https://www.esciencecenter.nl/calls-for-proposals/

Through all our projects we develop open source software that can be trusted and reused by multiple research groups. We have developed our Research Software Directory https://research-software-directory.org/ to promote and highlight the growing impact that open source software has on research.

Digitalization is fundamentally changing academic research, and research in almost any disciplines is impossible without high quality software that delivers reproducible results.  This is where the digital tools and expertise of the eScience Center plays an important role.
