Dynamics of many particle systems: from fluid to solid behavior through the jamming transition

Through a series of experiments and visualizations, this masterclass will explore the collective behavior that emerges in systems composed of many discrete bodies as their density increases. Using simple concepts, we will explain the origin of a variety of phenomena such as traffic jams, pedestrian lane formation, and granular segregation. Thereby, building on this and paying special attention to the jamming transition, we will introduce other, lesser-known physical processes relevant to industrial applications and biological problems.
