Science writing

In this masterclass/workshop I will offer advice on how to communicate science in writing for a range of different media, from scientific papers to writing for the general public, from short articles to books. Many of the considerations for how to write well apply regardless of the intended audience, having more to do with understanding the cognitive constraints on reading and with the logical organization of information. I will draw on my experience as an former editor at Nature, as a writer of news and feature articles for publications such as New Scientist and Scientific American as well as for newspapers and current-affairs magazines, and as the author of more than 30 books. I will analyse what makes writing effective and engaging, as well as explaining some common mistakes.
